The appointment of Jose Mourinho as the new manager of Manchester United has been a welcome move in various quarters.

After, the Portuguese has been a winner wherever he has been. There have also been times when Mourinho’s judgement has been called into doubt. Even though he has managed almost every top club in European football, he has never managed to stay at the club beyond three years. Mourinho consistently speaks about longevity of the manager, but he often ends up falling out with most of the club’s aspects before leaving within the stipulated period.

Manchester United are known to have patience with their managers, but the trend seems to have changed a lot since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. Mourinho is the third manager since the departure of Ferguson in 2013. The appointment of the Portuguese has led to several names being in doubt about the futures at the club. One of the foremost name is Ryan Giggs, who has a long-standing association that stretches back to almost three decades. He functioned as the assistant manager under van Gaal, but widespread rumours suggest that he may be relieved of his duties by Mourinho. Former Manchester City star Stuart Pearce says that Giggs should hold crunch talks with Mourinho before deciding on his future at Old Trafford.

“Only a conversation between Ryan and Jose will sort that situation out.If Ryan gets the inclination that he’s not wanted there, he’s a big enough man, he’ll move on and he’ll look for work elsewhere.Whether that’s a manager’s job or a coaching role,” said Pearce, who is aware of the managerial ambitions within Ryan Giggs. In the past, several of the assistant managers employed by Mourinho have gone on to become successful managers. The likes of Paul Clement and Karanka are perfect examples.
